Branding: We consumers prefer simple product names.

I know very little about marketing, but I can tell that if you want to compete with the coolness of the iPod, a good product certainly helps, but a name like YP-Z5 will only make people go “whatha f**k is that?”.

How do companies like Samsung and Sony actually come up with these product names? Do they start out with a nice simple codename for a product, and then encrypt that word before releasing the product?
