I’ve been watching a show from the 70′s recently (‘Columbo‘) and while I’m thoroughly enjoying the movie-length episodes with its old-fashioned dialogues and photography, one thing that strikes me is how ugly everything is on the show. Not the murders, but the clothes that people wear, the decor in the houses and even the cars. A lot of it might be due to the lighting, makeup and general quality of video shot back in the day, but it seems like there’s a world of difference between the world shown in Mad Men and Columbo. It’s almost as if things went from retro-chic in the 60s to butt-ugly in the 70s.

I know it’s not really true, and that the world of Mad Men is highly stylized, but it’s hard to watch Columbo and not notice the general lack of taste that seemed to pervade that world. How did the world go from this
